Recipes to Enhance or Replace Jake’s Kibble

Enhanced Dog Kibble

If you are growing concerned over the myriad of ingredients in Jake’s food that you can neither pronounce nor understand its use, you aren’t alone. Dog owners in every state and many countries are growing increasingly aware with what’s in their dog’s food.

Many have opted for a raw diet. Some prefer to just supplement the dry food with homemade food and others cook every Sunday night, both for themselves and for their dogs to enjoy during the week.

If you are considering making Jake’s food, but are unsure where to start, here are some recipes you can consider trying.

Momma’s Baked Chicken

When you have arrived home late and the dogs are looking at you as if to say, “Mom we’re hungry, what’s for dinner?” You can always whip up something.

Always have a baked chicken in the refrigerator for both your dogs and you to nibble on. If you are cooking one with your dogs in mind, never use salt, garlic or onions, as these are harmful for Jake.

Sprinkle the chicken with parsley, oregano and basil to the top of the bird and add about a half cup of water to the bottom of the casserole to ensure a moist bird. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and cook approximately 2 hours, must be at least 180ºF. Anything less can make you both ill.

If you are feeling lazy or are just plain exhausted from the day, here’s an easy one. Shred pieces from the baked chicken and add rice or plain cooked pasta and a little water and add this to their kibble.

Momma’s Chicken Soup

Cut up the whole bird that you just cooked the night before. Because you cooked the chicken in water, the meat falls away from the bones easily. It’s extremely important not to feed your dogs chicken bones unless you know what you are doing. Most don’t.

Here are the ingredients you can use:

  • ¼ cup of vegetable or olive oil
  • The pieces of chicken and their bones
  • Three cut up stalks of celery cut into ¼ inch slices
  • Three or four carrot sticks sliced into ¼ inch slices
  • Bag of frozen peas
  • Three bananas cut up into ¼ inch slices
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 can of chicken broth (low sodium)
  • 2 cups of rice

Instructions:

  1. Pour in oil, add chicken and veggies into a large pot.
  2. Sautee for 5 minutes, add 1 cup of water, stir frequently for additional five minutes
  3. Add remaining water, broth, rice, bananas
  4. Let simmer for about an hour
  5. Cool sufficiently to feed them.

If you want to eat some of your own soup, transfer the bland soup that you have made for them into another saucepan and add salt, garlic and onions to it, because you know these three ingredients can compromise your dogs’ health.
